Diane has Irish, Ålandian and Scottish ancestry. She was born in Sydney, Australia, attended Balmain teachers' college, and taught in both Sydney and the far west of NSW. She moved to Sweden, married and had a family. While in Sweden, she taught English, completed an Arts degree at the University of Gothenburg and had several art exhibitions.

Twenty–plus years later and back in Australia, she spent 16 years with the Swedish Consulate‐General in Sydney, studied for a Fine Arts degree at the University of Newcastle, became captivated by long‐distance hiking, and over a period of ten years published six books.
