While I was reading it, I swung constantly between liking it and disliking it; by the time I had reached the end, I was really not sure which side had won.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-831\" src=\"http:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/elegance.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"181\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/elegance.jpeg 181w, https:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/elegance-176x270.jpeg 176w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 181px) 100vw, 181px\" \/>It is the story of Ren\u00e9e, concierge to a block of very up-market flats. Although Ren\u00e9e\u2019s exterior is that of a poor, uneducated, middle-aged woman, her interior, where she <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">harbours a love of<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> the classics and music, is very different. After a tragic incident when she was still a young girl, she feels that she must <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">always <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">exist within<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> the limitations <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">of her own class.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In many ways, this is a book about class.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A death in one of the flats heralds a change of tenant, and bit by bit we are introduced to Kakuro, a wealthy, yet culturally aware, Japanese man. In one of the other flats, a thirteen-year-old girl, Paloma, is planning to kill herself. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The three people &#8211; <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Ren\u00e9e, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Kakuro and Paloma \u2013 gradually become intertwined with each other, and their lives change dramatically.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It is <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">very <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">obvious that Muriel Barbery must have studied philosophy, and philosophical thoughts and arguments saturate the entire novel. At times it is very easy to feel, rightly or wrongly, that Barbery is merely showing off her <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">talents in that area. The writing is often loquacious<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-832\" src=\"http:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Muriel-Barbery-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Muriel-Barbery-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Muriel-Barbery-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Muriel-Barbery-480x270.jpeg 480w, https:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Muriel-Barbery.jpeg 1023w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/> and unnecessarily convoluted, which I found extremely irritating. Yet, in between all these negatives, there are many <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">spot-on observations and some beautiful descriptions of the human situation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Whether or not the class divide <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">in the twenty-first century <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">is still as s<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">trong in France, as the book would make one believe, is not something that I can answer; however, class to one side, the book poses many interesting questions about human relationships.
