When I began <\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">my research<\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">, I discovered that the symbol K comes from the Greek letter <\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"><i>kappa<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">, which comes from the Semitic symbol <\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"><i>kap<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"> &#8211; the symbol for an open hand. Semites who had lived in Egypt <\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">borrowed<\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"> the hieroglyph for <\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"><i>hand <\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">(which beg<\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">ins<\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"> with D)<\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"> but changed the D sound to K, seeing as their own word for hand began with K. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">Many Greek words were eventually absorbed by Latin and the K became a C. Not only the Romance languages but also the Celtic languages used C in preference to K, and this practice continued into Old English.<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-761\" src=\"http:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/K-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/K-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/K-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/K-144x144.jpg 144w, https:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/K-270x270.jpg 270w, https:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/K.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">In English K is, to my way of looking at it, a rather lazy letter. It manages to do a good job with words like<\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"><i> kite, kennel, king <\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"><i>kitten<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">, but when it comes to words like <\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"><i>know, knit, knife, knight, knee<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"><i>knob<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"> it grabs first-letter glory only to sit back and let the next letter (in this case, N) do all the hard work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">In other languages, for example, Swedish, the K pulls its own weight, and in words like <\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"><i>kniv<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"> (knife), <\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"><i>kn\u00e4<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"> (knee), <\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"><i>knapp<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"> (button), the K is pronounced before the N and neither letter is left to do everything on its own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">From a Numerology perspective, K contains much nervous tension. It has the ability to inspire, and it is usually receptive to the feelings of others. It is often very creative and it has the power to achieve its goals, even when they seem unachievable. She called the cabin crew attendant over to complain about her seating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">&#8220;What seems to be the problem Madam?&#8221; asked the attendant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">&#8220;Can&#8217;t you see?&#8221; she said. &#8220;You&#8217;ve put me next to a kaffir. I can&#8217;t possibly sit next to this disgusting human. Find me another seat!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">&#8220;Please calm down Madam.&#8221; the stewardess replied. &#8220;The flight is very full today, but I&#8217;ll see if we have any seats available in business or first class.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">The woman gave<\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"> a snooty look at the black man beside her, and a few minutes later the stewardess returned with some good news. The lady looked at the people around her with a smug and self satisfied grin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">&#8220;Madam, unfortunately, as I suspected, economy is full. I&#8217;ve spoken to the cabin services director, and business is also full. However, we do have one seat in first class.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">Before the lady had a chance to answer, the stewardess continued. . .<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">&#8220;It is most extraordinary to make this kind of upgrade, and I had to get special permission from the captain. But, given the circumstances, the captain feels that it is outrageous that anyone should be forced to sit next to such an obnoxious person.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">With that, she turned to the black man sitting next to the woman, and said &#8220;So if you&#8217;d like to get your things, Sir, I have your seat ready for you. . .&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">At which point, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">many of the<\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"> surrounding passengers stood and gave a <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">standing ovation while the black <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">gentleman<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> walked up to the front of the plane.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a id=\"kale\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-large;\"><b><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-766\" src=\"http:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/kale.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"282\" height=\"179\" \/><a id=\"kale\"><\/a><b>Kale<\/b><\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"> is one the new wonder foods<\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">, and there is much written about its ability to help you l<\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">ose weight, look younger, live longer. . .<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">My initial experience with kale was, however, anything but positive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">Some years back, just as the fascination with kale was beginning to take off, Andris and I attended a short course on raw foods. The woman who led the course was an excited and ardent convert not only to the power of all raw foods but more particularly to the magical qualities of kale. Kale could be eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner; it could be chopped, sliced, mashed, ground and\/or thrown into a mixer and turned into (according to her) the most delicious (and nutritious) of green smoothies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">I had never eaten kale and my greengrocer did not stock it &#8211; in fact he was not quite sure what it was. However, he very kindly sourced it for me and the next time I was at his shop he had a whole box of kale for me. I was a little confused: the vegetables in the box resembled flowers dug up from someone&#8217;s garden &#8211; a medley of greens, blues, yellows and pinks. He assured me that the box contained kale, so I decided to take him at his word, and I took the box home with me.<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-768\" src=\"http:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/kale-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/kale-2.jpeg 275w, https:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/kale-2-272x182.jpeg 272w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">Of course, the kale in the box was the decorative kind &#8211; but I didn&#8217;t realize that. We ate steamed kale and kale in salads and kale in smoothies and all the while we wondered at the strange taste but kept telling ourselves that it was going to do us lots of good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-767 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/kale-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/kale-1.jpeg 274w, https:\/\/diane.eklund.abolins.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/kale-1-272x182.jpeg 272w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">Then I happened to see a photo of proper kale and after some time online, googling the word <i>kale<\/i>, I understood that what we had been eating was not actually what we should have been eating. Fortunately decorative kale does not kill you (or else I would not be here writing about it), but it is not particularly pleasant to eat. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\">We did eventually try the proper stuff, but by then I think my taste buds had lost interest. Apart from having both the highest mountain and the highest lake in the world, it is also the capital, and greater Kathmandu is home to about <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans Condensed, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">five million people, most of them followers of Hinduism.
