(\u2026) she wore a slim cool black dress, black sandals, a pearl choker. For all her chic thinness, she had an almost breakfast-cereal air of health, a soap and lemon cleanness, a rough pink darkening in the cheeks. Her mouth was large, her nose upturned. A pair of dark glasses blotted out her eyes. They both live in the same brownstone in New York, and while Holly hopes to rise beyond the fact that she was born in Texas, \u2018Fred\u2019, as an author, is hoping for the break that will eventually make him famous. Everyone falls in love with Holly, each in a different way, while Holly, almost obliviously, continues on a twisted, illogical path in pursuit of something that even she can probably not explain.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The constant trail of hopeful, young (and old) men, a husband (who appears out of the blue), Holly\u2019s weekly visits to the mafia boss Sally Tomato, resident of Sing Sing, and the Brazilian diplomat who <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">wants to be<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> husband number two, together with <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Holly\u2019s<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">somewhat <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">superficial confidence provide the story with humour but <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">more importantly<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> with depth <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">and <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">insight<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. This feeling has nothing to do with the jewels themselves, but everything to do with the men who work there and the subtle smells that permeate the building. As she says, when she has the \u2018reds\u2019, which in contrast to having the \u2018blues\u2019 (because you are getting too fat, or it is raining) are actually \u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>horrible (..) you\u2019re afraid and you sweat like hell, but you don\u2019t know what you\u2019re afraid of<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u2019&#8217;. At such times she takes a taxi to Tiffany\u2019s: \u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>It calms me down right away, the quietness and the proud look of it; nothing very bad could happen to you there, not with those kind men in their nice suits, and that lovely smell of silver and alligator wallets<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u2019 (p.40)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">This is a novella about a woman who is basically a thing of the wild. She can\u2019t be caged; she has to be able to do her \u2018own thing\u2019 even if what she is doing can seem illogical and detrimental. We may occasionally feel sorry for Holly, but at the same time we admire and respect her. In a world where everyone is expected to conform, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">it is possible that <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Holly <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>did<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">manage to <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">do things her way, inspiring \u2018Fred\u2019 to muse at the end of the book that he hoped that Holly <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">finally arrived<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> somewhere where she belonged. African hut or wh<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">erever<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Sans, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>(The quotes are from the Vintage 50th Anniversary Edition from 2008)<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a film based on the book, but I am dubious that a Hollywood interpretation of this novella could possibly compete with Capote\u2019s remarkable story.
