She was appalled by the conditions where the living conditions of many people were no better than those of the animals they tended &#8211; in fact, in most cases, the people and the animals shared the same dwelling. For the majority, potatoes formed the only food and were eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner and, only occasionally, was some variety afforded by <i>stirabout<\/i>&#8211; a mixture of milk and oats.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\" style=\"font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-decoration: none;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-bdhXtxvJFjA\/VOuxXhIkdfI\/AAAAAAAAB74\/-bDUpPbuOpo\/s1600\/house.jpg\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-bdhXtxvJFjA\/VOuxXhIkdfI\/AAAAAAAAB74\/-bDUpPbuOpo\/s1600\/house.jpg\" height=\"223\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\" style=\"font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Asenath was a Protestant; however, she was able to sympathize to some extent with the Catholics (despite the fact that many of them were completely unacquainted with the bible) and, quite often, remarked positively on the high level of education in their schools. Well aware of the problems caused by alcohol, she admired the work done by the temperance reformer Father Mathew, with whom she spent some time in Cork.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\" style=\"font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-decoration: none;\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\" style=\"font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Through Asenath&#8217;s eyes, the reader gradually becomes familiar with the wild beauty of the country, the generosity of its people and the injustices of a system where absentee English landowners had little or no thought for their tenant farmers who could be dismissed without reason and without warning.&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\" style=\"font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-decoration: none;\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\" style=\"font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-decoration: none;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-PPpJAsGSz_A\/VOuxXjFZEsI\/AAAAAAAAB78\/SkjjpqVlYIk\/s1600\/Ireland.jpg\" style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-PPpJAsGSz_A\/VOuxXjFZEsI\/AAAAAAAAB78\/SkjjpqVlYIk\/s1600\/Ireland.jpg\" height=\"320\" width=\"199\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The fact that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libraryireland.com\/irelandswelcome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Ireland&#8217;s Welcome to the Stranger<\/i> <\/a>is a first-hand account of conditions in the 1840s (and not an account written from hearsay many years later) makes the book extremely valuable and interesting.
