Initially, I wondered at the need for such detail, which, at times, seems almost voy<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">euristic; however, I later realized that it <i>was<\/i> necessary in order to put the rest of the novel into perspective.<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">There is also, I feel, a parallel between how the men at the club mindlessly <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">gorge their senses<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\"> on the semi-naked women and the way the general public are titillated by all the small details related <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">to a suspected terrorist.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\" style=\"font-style: normal; line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-Zq7wPjNW7TQ\/VdsFuQxjlwI\/AAAAAAAACM0\/jDku5m22DHQ\/s1600\/flanagan.jpg\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"247\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-Zq7wPjNW7TQ\/VdsFuQxjlwI\/AAAAAAAACM0\/jDku5m22DHQ\/s320\/flanagan.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\" style=\"font-style: normal; line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">As we are told more and more of Gina&#8217;s story, we realize that she is an ordinary person who, after a difficult start in life, is set on turning her life around. Like most of the characters in the book, she has ambition, but it is more genuine and more human. She looks on herself as a realist, but, as Flanagan notes: Realism is the embrace of disappointment, in order no longer to be disappointed. (p.9)<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\" style=\"font-style: normal; line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\" style=\"font-style: normal; line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">After the introduction in the Chairman&#8217;s Lounge, <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">fear is poured into the mix, and like <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">when <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">red ink <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">is<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">added to water <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">everything <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">gradually <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">changes colour.<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\"> <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">Flanagan wrote: \u201cPeople like fear. We all want to be frightened and we all want someone to tell us how to live\u2026\u201d  <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">(p.166) <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">and, in the words of the ASIO character: \u201c\u2026 unless they&#8217;re terrified, they <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">(the people)<\/span><\/span><\/span> won&#8217;t agree with what we do and why we do it\u2026 \u201d  <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">(p.272) <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\" style=\"font-style: normal; line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\" style=\"font-style: normal; line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">The politicians, the media, the police, the security services all feed the people <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">this fear, not only to keep the people where they want them but also to further their own careers \u2013 no one (except, perhaps, the policeman Nick Loukakis) gives any thought to the victim who is being sacrificed. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\" style=\"font-style: normal; line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\" style=\"font-style: normal; line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">In the end, everyone is at fault: the politicians and the media for creating the situation and the public for not having the brains to be able to see through the deceit. The terrifying thing is that this is where we are at the moment, and no one seems to understand <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">what is happening.
