She is not the grieving widow; in fact, she seems relieved, almost glad. She says: \u2026 I was glad he&#8217;d gone. No more of his nonsense.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\" style=\"font-style: normal; line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-decoration: none;\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">he structure of the book &#8211; short chapters, <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">each written <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">from the viewpoint of the widow (Jean <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Taylor<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">), the detective (Bob Sparkes) <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">or<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">the reporter (Kate Waters), <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">spanning a timeline from 200<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">6<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">\u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">2010 in no particular chronological order \u2013 keeps the reader glued to the page. At times it seems as though the detective has got it right and that Glen Taylor is definitely guilty; at other times it is obvious that Glen is a decent human being unnecessarily hounded by both the police and the media. <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">That the answer can remain hidden until the very end of the book is <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">a result of<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"> Barton&#8217;s writing and structuring skill.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\" style=\"font-style: normal; line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-decoration: none;\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Although the story is all about Glen, it actually<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">revolves around <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Jean, the <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">obedient, submissive wife, Sparkes<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">, the dedicated, <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">somewhat obsessive,<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">detective, <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">and Kate, the reporter. <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">he media, mainly personified by Kate Waters, <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">is painted<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"> as <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">false, <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">heartless<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">and completely driven by sensationalism and &#8216;the story&#8217;, <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">even though <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">there are a couple of small slivers of light suggesting that<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Kate <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">may <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">also ha<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">ve<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">a compassionate side. <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">M<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">any<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">of us <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">would happily place a equal sign between the media and<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">a mob of hyenas<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">it was, <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">therefore,<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">interesting that Fiona Barton \u2013 an ex-journalist \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">chose<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">to portray her former workplace from such a truthful, if sometimes negative, angle. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\" style=\"font-style: normal; line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-decoration: none;\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\" style=\"font-style: normal; line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I enjoyed the way the characters and the main events gather flesh and colour as the story proceeds.
