Written by a man who has spent much of his life criticizing the waste and corruption that has become <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i> hallmark <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>of <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>contemporary <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>government<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>s<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>, this is an informative and, at times, frustrating book. I use the word <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>frustrating,<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/i> because, although we are <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>well <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>aware of the situation <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/i>we <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>are <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/i>unable to do anything <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>to change it<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

In <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>Man of Destiny<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/i>, Charles Palmer, an ordinary IT worker, is propelled into the top position in <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>America<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>Although not <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>initially a contender for <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>the presidency, Palmer is <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>spurred on by a genuine concern for his country. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>Running as <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>an independent, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>he soon realizes that he is <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>on the same wavelength as <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>the people, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>but <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>the two major parties are colluding to stop him \u2013 by fair means or fo<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>ul.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/a>The novel is <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>not a majo<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>r <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>lite<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>r<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>ary even<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>t, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>but it do<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>e<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>s o<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>f<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>fer tho<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>u<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>ghtful and well-<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>r<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>e<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>s<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>ea<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>r<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>che<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>ideas and facts, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>and <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>i<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>t gives an easily absorbed <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>picture of the American electoral system. The main characters are <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>more or less <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>believable, and the pace of the novel is such that interest is maintained from the first to the last page. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>W<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>e m<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>ay <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>possibly <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>feel that the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>many <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>underhand plots <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>against Palmer’s reputation, and even his life, are something that would <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>find more credibility in a B-class movie, but when we look around us we realize that this, unfortunately, is how it is, especially when power, status and money are all at stake. In the race for the top job, Gross makes it very clear that, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>for most politicians,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>a desire to do something worthwhile for one<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>‘s <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>country <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>is certainly not the number one priority<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

As Gross writes on page 120, ‘\u2026 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>his <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>(<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>Palmer’s<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/i>) <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>enemy was not Nazism, or Communism. It was American bureaucratic and political insensitivity, the unprincipled waste of people’s money, and the distortion of the campaign and election process. It wasn’t democracy that was failing. It was politics<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>‘<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>Definitely a book worth reading.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
