<\/a>This amazing true story tells how, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>in <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>March<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>1943,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>Jan Baalsrud, a Norwegian expatriate resistance fighter, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>sails <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>from the Shetland Islands to the northern coast of Norway with <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>three other <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>Norwegians and <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>the crew of the small fishing boat. The idea <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>i<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>s to help train Norwegians within the resistance movement; however, after making landfall above the Arctic circle, plans go horribly wrong, and Jan is forced to flee across the inhospitable winter wasteland of <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>northern Norway. With Nazi soldiers pursuing him and not knowing who<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>m <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>he is able to trust, Jan has no choice but to push on.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/i><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n

<\/a>Wounded, without proper clothing and with very little food, he survives almost six weeks in conditions that would have seen the death of most people after only a few days. Freezing temperatures, bl<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>iz<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>z<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>ards, avalanches, snow blindness, frostbite, gangrene were only some of the hurdles that Baalsrud encounters as he desperately tries to take himself across occupied Norway into neutral Sweden.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n

That he succeeds <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>is dependent to a great extent on<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>his own strength of character but <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>it is also thanks to the many people who help him. These people offer their help even though they are fully aware that discovery <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>will most surely<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>result in a death sentence for both themselves and their families. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>We Die Alone <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>is a wonderful example of courage against formidable odds but also a celebration of ordinary people’s <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>charity and self sacrifice.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n

Although this is not a novel of great literary merit, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>We Die Alone <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>is definitely worth reading <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>for the suspense and the descriptions of bravery and resilience that go far beyond what <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>we believe could be possible.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n
